31 Day Challenge: Day 19

25 08 2013

Hey there! I used a great tutorial by Chalkboard Nails in order to create my galaxy mani. I used her advise and started with a black based and then sponged on the different colors.

I started with two coats of NYC Black Lace. I then sponged OPI Can’t Find My Czechbook, OPI Do You Lilac It?, OPI Tomorrow Never Dies, and OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls pretty much in that order on each nail. I sponged a little more My Boyfriend Scales Walls than I wanted on my index finger so I went back over with Can’t Find My Czechbook and Do You Lilac It? I finished with OPI I Juggle…Men so that it sparkled.

This was a fun mani to do because it didn’t take much skill. I was able to complete this mani on both my left and right hands easily. I want to create another galaxy mani that is more red, that will be my next challenge.

31 Day Challenge: Day 18

24 08 2013

Hey there! I’m trying to catch up on my challenge posts so I will be attempting to post twice a day.

I had no idea how I should paint half moons on my nails so I did a bit of Googling. I found that most half moon manicures were representations of the lunula. I started with two coats of OPI Number One Nemesis. I then used a nail art brush to paint OPI My Boyfriend Scales Walls at the base of my nails.

This was an easy manicure to complete, but I was not necessarily happy with the uniformity of my half circles. I would have redone my index finger to make the half moon more narrow and round, but I didn’t have time.

31 Day Challenge: Day 17

24 08 2013

Hey there! I didn’t need to be very creative with this task. I love glitter polishes even though they can be a pain to remove.

I started with two coats of OPI Siberian Nights. I layered two coats of OPI Which Is Witch? over my base color. This combination reminded me of a night sky.

I love this glitter polish because of the small bar glitter. I’m a sucker for cool glitter shapes.

31 Day Challenge: Day 16

21 08 2013

Hey there! I thought this task was an interesting one to include in the challenge. Tribal prints are very big in Hawaii, more so as tattoos. I used my husband’s tribal tattoo as my inspiration for this nail art. I painted designs from the lower half of my husband’s tattoo.

I started with two coats of OPI A-Taupe The Space Needle. I then used Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen Black to draw on the different tribal designs. I finished with OPI Matte Top Coat so that my mani was more like an actual tattoo.

This is my second attempt at using the Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen. I feel like I had a lot of control using the pen, but I would have liked to have been able to draw finer lines. Maybe with more practice I will be able to, but it seems as if not enough polish/ink is put down with a thinner line.

31 Day Challenge: Day 15

16 08 2013

Hi there! It’s a state holiday today so I have the day off, yay! Day 15, a delicate print, was a difficult task to interpret. Again I tried to keep it very simple. I started with two coats of OPI Berlin There Done That. I placed glitter from OPI Lights Of Emerald City.

I used tweezers to place the glitter, which was a mistake. The tweezers picked up too much of the polish and some of it transferred when I tried to place the glitter squares. I watched a great video on the OPI facebook. A toothpick was used to place pieces of glitter. I will try this the next time I want to do this nail art again.

31 Day Challenge: Day 14

11 08 2013

Hey there! It seems like ages since I posted. The school year just began, so I’ve had to devote some time to preparing for a whole new set of students. I also am teaching a new course, which means I need to spend even more time on lesson planning.

For the flower task I decided to depict a hibiscus flower. I began with two coats of OPI A Dozen Rosas (appropriate for flower nail art).  For the style and flower center I used OPI Little Red Wagon. For the pollen I used OPI The “It” Color.

The above was my finished product. I first wanted to use OPI In My Back Pocket for the pollen since pollen tends to be more orange. This blended too much with A Dozen Rosas and didn’t give me enough contrast. You can see below the lack of contrast. I almost forgot to get pictures before I covered the first “pollen” with the new “pollen” that’s why only my ring finger and pinky are pictured.

day14

I am more left brained and not really artistic. This part of the 31 day challenge is forcing me to be more creative and think more about how colors work together.
